Discovered in Canada in the 1800s, Howlite is named for its discoverer Henry How. He found it a nuisance in his gypsum mine & named it silico-boro-calcite. (Thumbs down, boring science name.) A few years later, it was renamed Howlite. (Thumbs up, fun name, a little ironic.)
Natural howlite is white with gray veins, but as a porous stone it takes dye very well. Often, dyed howlite is passed off as other, more expensive stones, especially turquoise.
